This paper looks at the symbol of the witch in the film Bulbbul (2020) to argue that the witch is not an uncomplicated figure of female empowerment but a construct moulded by patriarchal representation. Drawing upon Judith Butler’s notion of gender and performativity, Barbara Creed’s concept of the “monstrous-feminine,” and Laura Mulvey’s theory of visual spectacle, the paper analyses how the film produces the witch as both spectacle and threat. Rather than representing empowerment, the witch in Bulbbul develops her power from being framed as a frightening spectacle, suggesting that female agency is accepted only when it appears monstrous.
